In response to breaches and disclosures of sensitive information and other threats targeting businesses and institutions, the European Union has enacted the NIS 2 Directive, which requires them to comply with a long list of obligations. From now on, organizations' information systems must be secure, resilient, and protect sensitive systems and data.

Among the most critical sectors are power plants, healthcare facilities, and data centers.

With regard to access control, the role of physical access control (PAC) systems, which are closely linked to cybersecurity, is to closely monitor servers, equipment, and any premises containing confidential information. This involves, in particular, the implementation of RFID or NFC badges or biometric systems.

Article 18 of the NIS 2 Directive describes user access control policies such as secure authentication and other procedures to ensure availability, integrity, and confidentiality.
